What is the Baby Signs® Program?
The Baby Signs® Program is research based and designed to assist YOU in helping your baby learn to communicate before they can talk using manual signs. Most of the signs are from American Sign Language (ASL). It's not about a regimented program with flashcards and homework; it's finding the tools that work best for your family and that you can easily incorporate into your everyday life. You can find more information about the program on the main Baby Signs® website: www.babysignstoo.com
When should I start signing with my baby?
Anytime! But remember, signing to your baby doesn't mean they're going to be signing back right away. There are pros and cons to starting at any age, based on your baby's development and abilities. Signing to your newborn is great, but keep in mind that it's going to be a few months before they're even able to focus on your hands. Some parents are also concerned they waited too long. Never fear! Even toddlers who are already starting to talk can benefit from using signs to help communicate. While our target audience for classes/workshops is the 0-3year old crowd, we do list recommended ages for each class to give you an idea of what ages are most appropriate for each class.
(A more in-depth discussion and listing of the pros and cons for introducing signs at various ages is covered in our Baby Signs® Parent Workshop)
Is there an order I have to take the classes in? / Do I have to take them all?
You don't have to take them all! It's about finding what works best for your family, remember? It's fine to take one class, pick or choose a few, or take them all! While there is no specific "order" of classes, a general flow of classes based on age recommendations might look something like this:
-Rumble Tumble Tummy Time™ (Infants 0-6 months; introducing just a few signs)
-Sign, Say & Play (6-24 months; learning signs and how to incorporate into everyday activities)
-MORE Sign, Say & Play (6-24 months; picks up right where the Sign, Say & Play classes left off but includes more abstract signs, like feelings )
-On the Grow classes (18 months-3 years; teaching signs to help specific communication situations when your toddler is starting to talk)
Some of our On the Grow classes are Preschool age appropriate as well
The Baby Signs® Parent Workshop can be taken at any time and is especially good for new or expectant parents/caregivers or those looking to take just one class to get the tools and support they need.
We also offer training for child care workers with our Early Childhood Educator Training/Center Certification Program
What about online classes?
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, all of our classes are currently offered online.
